The Mississippi Blues Highway

Leaving Graceland and Memphis behind, we headed south in Highway 61, the Mississippi Blues highway.

Cotton fields on both sides, this straight, almost uninterrupted road ran through Blues Country where sharecroppers toiled in the fields for little pay, but created communities bound together by gospel, jazz and blues music. They were the real forerunners of Rock and Roll and Elvis came from this kind of community and its music.
